54. consider your art’s context

being away from art school, I forget that my work exists in a context of art movements. hell, I forget that I am an artist!

every piece of art you make can be examined through the lens of a movement of some place and time, another artist pioneered that movement and has followers in tow who experimented.

why study the context of your art? it could limit your work!

sure but it can also give you perspective and inspiration. it can help you connect with contemporaries and community. it can make me feel less like a lone explorer.

in a broad sense, thinking about artists reminds me I’m part of a big world of people making stuff. it makes me feel like the work I’ve been doing is toward something.

being a commercial animator who isn’t getting paid much feels like flopping. being a new media artist who is exploring feels like succeeding.

funny, labeling myself an artist again also comes with baggage. artists are arrogant lazy self promoters! leeches!

yaya nvm that. self luv

ok lets see some relevant art movements:

Finish Fetish - polished but surreal objects and images

Funk art - silly highly personal abstractions

Hairy Who - busted little drawings
