106. the rule of 1, 2, 3, 4
July 3, 2024I found this in a book on writing but I think it applies to all forms of art
1 is whole
2 are contrasted
3 is a complete trinity
4 implies endlessness
for example
1 tree is simple and complete - think of a Christmas tree
2 trees are compared and seen in relation to each other. tall tree next to a short
3 trees are a balanced trio
4 trees or more become a grouping, a forest even!
In writing you can use this rule for the number of adjectives
1. Tom is bored.
2. Sally is generous and lonesome.
3. Bill is itchy, hot and tired.
4. Alex is warm, intelligent, refined and skilled with a hairbrush.
